The 1979 Scanlens set is great release  for two reasons. Firstly its the year of the authors births and secondly it has the highest percentage of facial hair in the history (at a massive 35%).

The set design is based on the 1978 Topps NFL sets and is pretty basic. The only real design element is a solid-colored frame around the picture. The left side is thicker and has the team name running along the vertical axis. A small recessed area between the frame and the picture contains the player’s name.

This is a great set though and contains some of the games biggest names - Alex Jesaulenko, Rex Hunt, Leigh Matthews and future 2 time premiership coach Malcom Blight.

It also contained the rookie card for Essendon legend Tim Watson (who has a rather bewildered look on his face).

And I guess along with 1978,it produced debate about the relative merits of the action shot VS the portrait.

Amazing how many of those scanlens series came straight from American designs.

When you say basic you aren't kidding. Many collectors are still mixing up scanlens checklists

from years close together(such as 1974/1975 and 1978/79) And then there is the identical 1973 A and B.

identical except for one letter, meaning a mixed set will just not do..it's now 144 cards instead of the original 72

some people thought they needed.

If anyone is interested in any cards from this series to finish their set feel free to PM me, I will see what I can do.
