As the title asks, has AFL become to soft?

Over the years the AFL has made rule changes left, right and centre that have angered fans, but non like the head high bump rule.

Since the beginning of the season a few have fallen victim to the rule. The latest being Melbourne Star player Jack Viney.

For those who have not seen the incident, here is a video clip:

My personal view is that some leniency needs to be added to ensure accidental head bumps do not result in a suspension.

Alternatively if the AFL is so determined on protecting heads, ban the bump altogether, because let's face it these accidental head clashes will continue and some unlucky player just may miss the AFL grand final because they went that extra yard in a closely matched finals game to get their team over the line.

I think you will find in most sports they're changing rules to protect the players and also to protect the games income as they don't want to face litigation down the track, the NRL has put new rules to stop any head shots, some times the referees penalise the most innocuous "touches" on the head which leads to frustrations by both players and spectators, the NRL/AFL are following the example that the NFL has set...
