According to several NBA sources Sunday, the Bulls have been actively looking to improve the starting lineup at almost any cost, with Derrick Rose the only untouchable player — and not by choice.

“They are looking to exhaust as many assets as it will take,’’ one source said of general manager Gar Forman and head of basketball operations John Paxson.

...

Carmelo Anthony is still Plan A as the Bulls and the rest of the NBA await to see if the Knicks forward will opt out of his contract. But the Bulls are more active in their pursuit of Kevin Love than initially rumored.

[translating that first bit: Rose is, understandably, considered damaged goods around the league. And Noah would technically be on the table]

This report suggests the Bulls have been more aggressive than what we've been hearing locally (including from Cowley himself) so far, where it was looking more like the 'plan' was to hope Melo would take less money to join a Bulls team with their other pieces intact. And the fallback (likely) plan being adding to the roster's depth with no star addition.

Here, Taj is specifically mentioned as someone the Bulls are 'loosening their grip' on if it means acquiring a star.

This would be very un-Bulls-ian, and it's just a single report from a guy I'm not sure we can trust. But if true, perhaps it is them coming to grips with reality: to get an major upgrade in talent, they may have to sacrifice of of 'their guys'.

I will see it when it happens. Bulls management in the past have always been about saving money,

The "damaged goods" rumor about Rose is a little concerning. Hopefully he can get a break and prove everyone wrong.

Assuming this rumor is true, what players should they be chasing  and what players should they move that will make Bulls a contender in the East?

Derrick Rose to have knee repaired

CHICAGO -- Bulls guard Derrick Rose has a torn meniscus in his right knee and will undergo surgery, the team said Tuesday.

Rose reported earlier in the day with right knee pain. An exam and subsequent MRI confirmed the tear.

A timetable for Rose's return will be determined once he has surgery, the team said. The Bulls and Rose decided to fix the meniscus tear instead of cutting the damaged part out in order to elongate Rose's career.

The 26-year-old was averaging 18.4 points and 5.0 assists in 46 games this season.

The general feeling within the organization from several team personnel Tuesday night was one of disbelief and sadness after all the rehab work Rose put in over the past two and a half seasons.

The torn meniscus is the same injury he sustained Nov. 22, 2013, against the Portland Trail Blazers.

Rose tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in Game 1 of the 2012 playoffs against Philadelphia. The 2011 NBA MVP missed the entire next season and played in only 10 games before the previous right knee injury shelved him for the rest of last season.

Over the past three seasons, the Bulls will have paid Derrick Rose $52.8 million. They have received roughly $10 million of that money back (19 percent) through insurance.

The Bulls will not be reimbursed by insurance, as there are only 25 games left this season. NBA teams start to be reimbursed for injuries once a player has missed 41 consecutive games with the same injury.

Chicago got a 41-game credit for the 2012-13 season, when Rose missed the entire season, and a 20-game credit for the 2013-14 season, when he missed 61 straight games.

It's unclear when Rose reinjured the knee. He appeared to be rounding into form last month, averaging 22.6 points over his final 14 games before the All-Star break, but he had struggled since returning to the court after the time off.

He was scratched for one game last month for soreness in his left knee and missed four games in November with a hamstring injury.

Rose had eight points on 1-for-13 shooting while playing almost 33 minutes in Monday night's 87-71 victory over Milwaukee. He averaged 10.7 points on 23.5 percent shooting in Chicago's first three games after the break.

It's quite a blow for the surging Bulls, who have won six of seven and appeared to be picking up steam after a tough stretch.

The impact was also felt in Las Vegas, where the Bulls' odds to win the title plummeted from 8-1 to 20-1 at the Westgate SuperBook.

Chicago had been one of the most popular bets at William Hill's Nevada sportsbook, where only theGolden State Warriors had attracted more futures bets than the Bulls. With Chicago falling, theCleveland Cavaliers' odds improved from 3-1 to 5-2 at the SuperBook. The Atlanta Hawks went from 7-1 to 5-1.

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook, who had three surgeries to repair a torn meniscus, was among those expressing disbelief over Rose's injury.

"I was speechless," Westbrook told NBA TV. "It's so tough for a guy like that who plays so hard and has to go through it again and again and again."

LeBron James and Paul George were among many players reacting to the news on Twitter late Tuesday.

Well I been reading comments about Rose's injury didn't realise how many stupid people there are out there.

Stuff like "Bulls need to trade him for a better PG and let other team deal with his injuries".  In his current state I doubt anyone would be willing to trade even a bench player to pick up his contract.

Really sad to see Rose down again. Shame we will never get to see his full potential grow in front of us and whether he would have been able to lead the Bulls to a championship ring. Hopefully he makes it out of surgery ok and can at least become a role player rather than scoring leader and proves his worth in some other way. Otherwise I can see the Bulls potentially trying to terminate the contract or not signing him up again after his current one expires.

Unbelievable the run of luck Rose has had.  I hope for his own sanity and the Bulls he does not end up another Penny Hardaway.

DAMN WE ARE CURSED!!!

Jimmy Butler is expected to miss three to six weeks with a sprained left elbow, the latest setback for the injury-plagued Chicago Bulls.

However, Butler will not need surgery to repair the injury, a league source confirmed to ESPNChicago.com.

Butler was diagnosed with a Grade 2/3 ulnar ligament sprain and a small bone impaction injury after undergoing an MRI on Monday, one day after he was injured in a loss to the Los Angeles Clippers.

He suffered the injury when he collided with Clippers center DeAndre Jordanthree minutes into the second half Sunday and did not return.

The hope within Butler's camp is that rest and treatment will allow him to come back before the regular season ends and get a few games under his belt alongsideDerrick Rose, who is expected to be out four to six weeks after having knee surgery Friday.

Butler, who became an All-Star for the first time this season, has been the Bulls' best two-way player this season, averaging 20.2 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 55 games.

The Bulls are trying as best as they can to keep a positive attitude in the wake of the latest injury news, but veteran Kirk Hinrich knows the Bulls are in a tough spot.

"[Butler] is a two-way player, All-Star, he's just having an unbelievable year," Hinrich said. "It's a huge loss but, you know, we've kind of been through this before."

The Bulls also are without Taj Gibson, who is wearing a walking boot after spraining his left ankle in Friday night's win over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Gibson has been dealing with the same injury throughout the season and was not putting any weight on the ankle after Friday's game.

"I guess when it rains, it pours," Hinrich said. "We can't sit around feeling sorry for ourselves. Nobody else is going to. We've got to find a way."

Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau echoed those sentiments.

"It's the nature of the league," Thibodeau said of all the injuries. "No one's going to feel sorry for us. We just got to get out there and we got to get it done."

Thibodeau, who likes to use the phrase "next man up," in reference to a no excuse policy in regards to injuries, was was asked who the next man up would be for the Bulls at this point. The veteran coach was quick with a response.

"Our team," Thibodeau said. "Whoever's next, get out there, get it done ... it's our reality. We got more than enough to get it done."
